
The Waldviertel is the Austrian key growing area of Papaver somniferum – the most important sort of poppy seeds. For millenniums the usage of poppy seeds has been proved. Since the middle Ages poppy has been playing an important role in the Waldviertel. Waldviertler grey poppy was traded at the commodity exchange in London until 1934.
Within the European Union agricultural crops can be equipped with a special label, when quality or parameters are tightly bound to a special region.After a proposal the sign “Protected Designation of Origin (PDO)” or “Protected Geographical Indication (PGI)” can be used. The sign “Protected Designation of Origin” certifies a much tighter correlation between the product and its given geographical origin.
