Ray Ruff, famous legendary music industry record producer, was born Marvin Ray Ruffin on March 24, 1938 in Amarillo, Texas. He was playing semi-pro baseball for his city home team in 1955-56 when he met Charles Hardin Holley, a player on the Lubbock team and better known to the world as the legendary Rock'n'Roll performer Buddy Holly. Buddy invited him to come to Lubbock and visit him in 1956, which he did, and the next year Buddy invited Ray to meet his producer, Norman Petty, at Petty's recording studio in Clovis, New Mexico. Ray and Buddy became good friends, and were seen together many times before the "Day the Music Died" on February 3, 1959 when Buddy Holly died in a tragic plane crash while on a winter tour. After Buddy's passing, Ray often went down to Clovis to hang out with and play with the Crickets, and soon got his own rock band together, The Checkmates, who recorded from 1959 to 1964 on many small indie record labels, including Ray's own label, Ruff Records. In the early Sixties, Ray recorded mostly original songs like his own "I Took A Liking To You" with a "Buddy Holly" sound. In 1960, Ray Ruff went to Los Angeles, where he got a job as a recording intern and co-producer for ABC-Paramount records, and soon was producing all of singer Brian Hyland's records for that label and for Dot Records. In the early 1960s, Ray also recorded with artists such as Pat Boone, Elvis Presley, Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams Jr., Van Morrison and Nancy Sinatra. Ray Ruff was a record producer for over 40 years, and produced some of the biggest names in the music business. He passed away in 2005.
