With the camera on the Eastern Front (DVD)

"Embedded journalists" in the fighting troops built journalists reporting from the front line over the course of a campaign are not an invention of the present. Even in World War II were about 300 so-called "movie reporting" in action, on behalf of the Reich Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda shot footage of all fronts for the "German newsreel", often in the front battle zone and using one's own life.

One of them was Götz Hirt-Reger, who as a boy was an avid amateur filmmakers. Where it him breath away: his Kodak camera and tapes he had a supply of movies wherever you go. Because of his special talent, he was in Berlin, designed for film and reporting as ordered Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front. Here he turned spectacular, partly colored photographs of the advance on Moscow, the battles at Orel, the tank battle of Kursk, the Cuban beachhead and from the front on the Dnieper. He filmed the defenses of fellow Romanians on the Black Sea, joined a raiding party against the Soviet lines and witnessed the bloody battle in Greater Jassy and Kischinow.

What hardly anyone knew: Hirt-Reger turned the entire time with two cameras. With the one he filmed the official recordings, with his private he held, which was not shown in the newsreels: the uncluttered life of German soldiers in front and behind the front. Götz Hirt-Reger recordings that have survived the war unscathed rank today among the most important film treasures from the period of the Third Reich.
