Random is the term used to describe a vehicle drawn by three horses or other draught animals, usually a single-axle vehicle, in which the animals are tensed one behind the other. If the animals are pulled side by side, this is called a troika.

The front horse should be lighter and more elegant than the fork horse walking between the Anzen directly in front of the cart. Usually the forked horse wears a collar, while the middle and front horse are usually equipped with breastplate harnesses. Most of the pulling load is carried by the fork horse.

Tandem and Randoman tension come from England and have the advantage over horses walking side by side that they can also be used on very narrow paths. Due to the unequal distribution of the tensile load (as in six-horse driving) the horses in front are hardly loaded at all and are available as rested riding horses after the ride. Tandem and Randoman tension were for this reason also frequently used for hunting: Once at the destination, the front horses were saddled for the hunt. Apart from these purely practical advantages, the Randoman Tension appears elegant and representative and shows not only the well performing horses but also the ability of the driver and draught animals.

In Randoman tension almost always a single-axle gig with very large wheels is driven.

Random manoeuvring is harder to drive than a six-in-hand carriage: it places high demands on the skills of the coachman and the horses. Today it is driven almost exclusively for show purposes. Source Wikipedia
