The name Lapislazuli has its origin partly in the Arabic language. The word "Azul" (in German: Himmel), which originates from the Arabic language, was added to the word "Lapis" (in German: Stein) by the adoption into the Latin language. Lapis lazuli was already considered in the 3rd millennium B.C. a sought-after commodity from which artistic objects were made. The ancient trade route, the Silk Road, is said to have previously been called the Lapislazuli Road. For the ancient Egyptians this gemstone was the most precious thing they could give to their dead pharaohs as a burial gift. Lapis lazuli was partly worked into the death mask of Tutankhamun. For many rulers of history, lapis lazuli was a protective stone. This gemstone also played a role as a pigment because of its azure blue colour. This was processed into make-up and used in painting. In antiquity, in India, China and even among the Incas, Lapis lazuli was known as a healing stone. According to their tradition, its sulphur content is said to be effective against epilepsy, skin diseases or bilious diseases and to increase potency.

Effect: Lapis lazuli promotes sincerity and improves one's own credibility. Through increased optimism, it helps with depressions, fears or blockades, lets bad habits go and facilitates the ability to criticize. Additionally it creates new self-confidence and makes it easier to talk about oppressive burdens from the soul. Lapis lazuli can also promote a clear mind, concentration and intuition. This healing stone is also helpful in so far as it opens for relationships and friendships.

Lapis lazuli is a mineral mixture and consists mainly of the minerals lasurite, calcite and pyrite. It is mainly formed by transformation (metamorphosis) from lime to marble. As a sulphur-containing sodium aluminium silicate it belongs to the mineral class of silicates. Inclusions of pyrite cause a golden shimmer. The best known site is in Afghanistan, where it was already mined in ancient times.
